I was in the lineup at Tim Hortons this afternoon, and, when I got to the counter, I ordered my usual large double-double, and, made an observation. The gentlemen behind the counter didn't smile once the whole time. He was miserable and grumpy. In general, I'm naturally outgoing and very cheerful, and I tried to get him to smile, but he wouldn't budge. I said "Thank you" and he responded with a miserable "Bye". It was sort of depressing that this guy couldn't even crack a smile, couldn't even show a tiny sparkle of emotion at all.
Later on in this evening, I went back and got a water. This time, it was a cheerful and pleasant, elderly lady working the counter. What a world of a difference it makes when you smile! She was absolutely radiant with joy and it was clear that she was a happy lady. I said "Thank you" and she responded with a powerful and genuine "You're very welcome. Have a great day".
What a difference from my first experience today at that very same Tim Hortons! What a difference a smile can make! I guess sometimes we take that for granted.
So, take this as a friendly reminder to keep smiling - not only does it put you in a better mood, but it keeps those around you in a better mood!
